Peru 2011

The Sonia Morales Expedition Team traveled led to southern Peru to trek and climb in the Vilcanota Range, the home of multiple impressive peaks including Ausangate.

Our plan called for a combination of a long trek interspersed with climbs of opportunity along the way. Our actual journey included taking in the sights and sounds of colonial Cusco, a train trip to Machu Picchu and a great combination trek and climbing adventure, covering over 75 miles of spectacular Andean terrain. Our climbs included the glaciated Nevado Campa I (~18,150 ft.), the rocky Cerro Lliani (~17,800 ft.) and an attempt on the phenomenal ridge of Mariposa, a.k.a. Santa Catalina.

In between those geographic high points, we spent time with great Peruanos, camped for eight days above 15k, tried to stay warm while cavorting with Sra. Stokes, and all the while had a grand time doing so. We were blessed with some of the best logistics to date, making for an incredible team, moderate weather, and the delight of having no set schedule but for meeting our ride at the end of the trail.

If that sounds interesting, take a look and I promise you will find all the details you can tolerate . . . from logistics to details about the peaks and trek to maps of our route . . .
