Peru 2011

Thoughts, Lessons, Impressions . . .

Our goal in this trip was to see a mountain range off the beaten path of most organized groups and far from the Cordilleras that draw hordes of climbers. We were successful, crossing paths with but one solo climber and only slightly with one large trekking group. The thoughts, lessons and impressions in conclusion are:

  • G and Bob, climbing partners extraordinaire, can say no less . . .

  • Thanks to all the folks at my firm without whom this type of trip simply does not happen. They covered for me and I appreciate it.

  • Carlos, John, Mariella, Domingo, Leo, and Rocque put all the pieces together, in the right order, every day, for two weeks, without fail . . .

  • This part of Peru has big valleys and big peaks, like our trip to Argentina, you can walk for days to get from the top of a valley to the bottom.

  • Bring a litre of Pisco along for the pure fun of it. How often do you get to do that kind of thing at more than 15,000 feet?

  • The further from town you go the more Spanish you need to know. Sure you can get along but it isn't as much fun.

  • Bob can grow a beard.

  • If the hot springs are out of the way, then change your route so that they are not out of the way.

  • Those Inca dudes were some dead serious stone cutters.

  • Machu Picchu really does look exactly like the cover of National Geographic.

  • Don't miss the Lomo Saltado and the Inca Cola.

  • I didn't get sick . . . not bad after losing 10 lbs in 10 days in Bolivia a few years back.

  • We had the best darned cook and arierros that we could have hoped for.

  • John did not know the meaning of "manana" - that's a good thing.

  • You get a chance to fly LAN, take it, that's a good outfit.

  • And finally . . . Ray Ban was just cool, dude . . . the guy is a styler!

  •
